What We Do

Balsbury Grocer > What We Do

Balsbury Grocer

The grocer is primarily a space for people to come and make connections, with old friends and new friends through great quality food and coffee, whether to stay on site or takeaway.

We are a grocer, bakery and café at the heart of a large and active village where people can pop for a pint of milk, stay for a chat and coffee, or settle down for a few hours’ work in a small, separated workspace area.

Shop

Managing a mix of everyday basics to all out little luxuries. Including all the ‘village store’ lines, both food and non-food, eg papers and stationery, tobacco and alcohol etc. Then with a good selection of ‘Every day Essentials’ produce from local farms and suppliers.

Sitting alongside those are some ‘Little Luxuries’; some gorgeous high end grocery items, often (though not always) from local suppliers, eg locally smoked salmon, high end charcuterie. We also have some lifestyle space for gifts, household items and smellies!

Café

Offering locally roasted coffee, and light brunch and lunch throughout the day. With a great home cooked ‘deli’ / kitchen counter of food to make a meal with. All to eat onsite or to takeaway.

On Sundays we have a little special brunch menu with bacon sandwiches, waffles and croque monsieur. In time the menu will develop to seven days a week and offer a fabulous brunch and lunch menu. And we’re even exploring the possibility of the occasional evening ‘pop up’ events.

Bakery

At the heart of what we do, and very much the standard we set, bread and pastries are made by hand, from scratch and baked fresh daily.

Paulo and his team have a great reputation, and aim to make food you can fall in love with everyday of the week.

People are starting to come from far and wide for their favourite goodies, including someone from Cornwall who orders our baguettes by the dozen, a family from Bath who come for the quiches, or cyclists from a club in South Somerset who plan their route to stop for almond croissants.

Studio

We have a beautiful little studio space upstairs, with grass on the floor, clouds in the sky and a sunshine shining brightly.

We haven’t opened it yet due to covid worries, but soon we’ll have some days set aside to book a hot desk, other days will have little events, and it will also be available for private hire for meetings and small functions.

Community

We really do believe in supporting and creating a community, whether that’s people from the local villages, or foodies coming to meet other like-minded people. We have already run a few little community events (covid permitting) and have carved pumpkins, held pottery and art classes for children, and planned birthday parties.

Genuinely we want to encourage people from all walks of life and diversity to feel welcome when visiting us, and we offer several practical things which we hope demonstrate that commitment: our staff are about to take Dementia Awareness and Autism Awareness training; we are planning to make our WC as accessible as possible and are working with ‘Changing Places’ to see whether we can install a full sized changing table and hoist; and any professional carer, on duty with a client and with ID, is offered free tea or coffee. It’s not a lot, but a few little steps we hope make someone’s day a little easier.

As well as offering our own community events we also support other local organisations and charities. In just the last year we have worked closely with Key4Life, a fabulous charity based in Butleigh, by hosting their burger van every Wednesday night, arranging a Bank Holiday event in our garden with waffles and ice cream and by having several of their youngsters work in our kitchen on placements to introduce them to a professional kitchen.

At the end of each day any excess we have left, is given to Help for Homeless, another local charity who then take the food onto the streets of Bath and Yeovil to be given to people how need it, rather than thrown in the bin.

At the front of the shop is a large box for food parcel donations, St Dunstans church in the village collect it and take it to the food bank they support in Yeovil.

We have a charity of the month we support, and in the last few months we have raised funds for  Comic Relief, Ups and Downs Somerset, British Heart Foundation, The Royal British Legion and others. When we can, we make themed iced cookies to raise awareness and funds. In the coming year staff and customers will nominate a charity so we have a published monthly calendar for you to see who we are supporting.
